
Mike Schreuder is an American diplomat and leader of multinational teams at the intersection of U.S. policy, process, and public engagement. A member of the Senior Foreign Service, Mike has a passion for building U.S. city and state economic and cultural ties abroad and engaging with American youth and civic groups on the importance of diplomatic service.
Mike has served the United States for nearly 25 years in Washington, D.C. and across the Middle East, Latin America, and India. Since August 2023, he has served as the Deputy Principal Officer in U.S. Consulate General Mumbai, leading the daily operations of a team of U.S. Direct Hire and Indian National staff who process more student visa adjudication than any post in the world. Prior to India, Mike served as acting Deputy Chief of Mission and Political and Economic Counselor in Embassy Doha 2020-2023, leading Afghanistan relocation operations of 80,000 Afghans in partnership with Qatar. He led U.S. Government (USG) efforts with the State of Qatar in preparation for the World Cup 2022 in Doha, coordinating our government’s logistical and security support for the 50,000 U.S. citizen fans who traveled to Qatar.
Mike started his Foreign Service career as the American Citizen Services officer and Non-Immigrant Visa line officer in Bogotá, Colombia, then as the trade and intellectual property rights officer in Mexico City, Mexico. He led U.S. narcotics interdiction programs in Embassy Bogotá and, in partnership with U.S. Special Forces, his teams supplied and trained the Colombian National Police to fight transnational narco-terrorist groups. In Uruguay, Mike successfully advocated for U.S. agriculture and software companies and supported the Venezuelan opposition’s diplomacy in Latin America during service as deputy political and economic section chief in Embassy Montevideo.
As a reporting officer in Consulate General Jerusalem, Mike engaged across Palestinian and Israeli societies to gather facts and perspectives on West Bank and Gaza economic and humanitarian issues and reported to Washington. He organized Israeli-Palestinian water talks in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem and reported on Hamas’ vicious takeover of Gaza in 2007. While serving in Saudi Arabia, Mike and his interagency team led USG reporting on the rise of Mohammed bin Salman as the Kingdom’s new leader and garnered Saudi support for U.S. strategies and operations against ISIS in Iraq and Syria and Al Qaeda in Yemen. In Washington, D.C., he has served on the Oman and Qatar desks and as the NEA Arabian Peninsula Affairs’ Senior Advisor on the Middle East Strategic Alliance. Mike speaks Spanish and Arabic.
Mike graduated from Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan, the city where he was born and raised and maintains ties. He enjoys playing golf, basketball, and visiting his family and friends in Michigan every chance he gets. He and his wife, Jennifer, have four children, all of whom reside in Mumbai where they are active in their school and church communities.
