Emergency Information for American Citizens

Kolkata holds a preeminent place in the history of American diplomacy as one of the oldest American consulates in the world, and the very first established in India. On November 19, 1792, President George Washington nominated Benjamin Joy of Newbury Port as the first American Consul to Kolkata, with advice from Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson. Although Joy arrived only in April 1794 and was never formally recognized by the British East India Company, his appointment marked the beginning of America’s official engagement with Kolkata and, indeed, with all of India.
Today, the U.S. Consulate General in Kolkata continues this historic legacy. Located on Ho Chi Minh Sarani, the Consulate oversees U.S. interests in 11 states: West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Tripura. The Consulate provides an array of services to American citizens residing or traveling in our consular district, such as assistance in emergencies and help with passports and reports of birth. The American Center, situated on Jawaharlal Nehru Road, serves as the Consulate’s hub for Public Diplomacy programs and houses a library open to all.
